May 14--This South Florida TV station has received a ratings boost thanks to "Jeopardy!"
What is WPLG Channel 10?
Since Las Vegas sports gambler James Holzhauer began his 22-game winning streak on the long-running syndicated game show in early April, the show's ratings have spiked nationally, including at local affiliates such as WPLG, based in Pembroke Park.
Last year, "Jeopardy!" drew an average of 93,000 viewers on WPLG, which broadcasts the show at 7:30 p.m. weekdays in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Since Holzhauer has been winning, the show has been drawing an average of 124,000 viewers to WPLG, according to ratings from the ABC affiliate.
In fact, WPLG's current "Jeopardy!" audience is more than its competitors' programs at that time combined: "Deco Drive" on WSVN-Ch. 7; "Entertainment Tonight" on WFOR-Ch. 4 and "Access Hollywood" on WTVJ-Ch. 6.
WPBF-Ch. 25, the ABC affiliate in West Palm Beach which also broadcasts "Jeopardy!", did not respond to messages seeking information about its ratings.
Holzhauer's mastery of the game has renewed viewer interest in the show, now in its 35th year with host Alex Trebek, who won a Daytime Emmy last weekend for outstanding game show host.
The show was drawing an average of 9.6 million viewers nationally when Holzhauer began competing, compared to 12 million viewers recently, according to Variety.com.
Holzhauer holds the second-longest winning streak (22) and regular-season cash total ($1,691,008 million) in "Jeopardy!" history, behind Ken Jennings, who won 74 straight games and $2,520,700 in 2004.
Holzhauer also maintains the record for single-day cash winnings: $131,127.
Holzhauer hasn't been on the show the past two weeks as "Jeopardy!" presents its annual teacher's tournament. South Florida viewers have caught Matthew Bunch, teacher at AcadeMir Charter School Middle in west Miami-Dade, who lost on the May 7 episode but earned a wild card and will appear in the semifinals Wednesday night.
Holzhauer returns to the show Monday to continue his pursuit of Jennings' records.
