We Won't Forget Letter From Trump: Erdogan

Newser — Bob Cronin

Turkey's president said Friday that “we haven’t forgotten" President Trump's unusual letter and said that, in time, "steps will be taken" in response to it. "Don't be a fool," Trump had warned Recep Tayyip Erdogan the letter about Turkey's military offensive in Syria. Trump's letter "did not go hand in hand with political and diplomatic courtesy," Erdogan said in a news conference, Politico reports. There's no rush for Turkey to act on "this lack of respect," he said, per Newsweek, "but when the time comes, we would like it to be known that we will take the necessary steps."

Erdogan did not say what those steps might be. The letter also admonished Erdogan not to be "a tough guy." Erdogan threw the letter into the trash when he received it, per the BBC. Turkey's ambassador to the US told PBS on Thursday that Trump shouldn't have sent the letter as written. "It lacks all the niceties, and it's void of any established practices in that regard," he said. (The Kremlin also found the letter unusual.)
